Betty Vogel Cantrell, longtime Sherman resident, passed away, April 16, 2024, at Texoma Healthcare. The youngest of four children, Betty was born to Mintia Campbell Vogel and John Benno Vogel on March 14, 1924, in McAlester, Oklahoma. Her father died when she was five years old, and her mother successfully reared her family during the great Depression era. Betty was a student at Oklahoma A & M College in 1941 when the United States entered World War II. She transferred her sophomore year to Southeastern Oklahoma State College where she met her future husband, William Grover Cantrell, Jr., a senior transfer student in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. They married May 15, 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Cadet Cantrell was in the college training detachment at the University of Tennessee. She remained with her husband while he served stateside until his discharge in March 1946, at which time they returned to Sherman to make their home. Betty was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Class since 1946, and a life member of United Methodist Women. She was an active member since 1950 of the Stratford Club and a charter member of the Ethel Rentfro Review Club. She also served as a volunteer in the WNJ Hospital Auxiliary for many years. Betty had been a part of the Austin College community as an administrative secretary from 1956 until 1972. In addition to her parents Betty was preceded by her husband William Grover Cantrell of sixty years in 2003, and two sisters and a brother. She is survived by her twin son and daughter: James Vogel Cantrell and wife Cindy of Lakewood, Colorado and Alice Cantrell Rider and husband Chris of Bella Vista, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Jennifer Owen of Keller, Jeffery J. Johnson and wife Jennifer of West Lake, Brian J. Cantrell of Austin, and Katie Cantrell Gann and husband Mark of Lakewood, Colorado, and great grandson Cooper. Also surviving are three nieces and their families. Dannel Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements, with a visitation at Dannel Funeral Home, Monday, April 22, 2024 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. A Graveside Service will be held at West Hill Cemetery Pavilion on Monday, April 22, 2024 at 11:30 AM. Rev. Joe Ed Goolsby of First United Methodist Church Sherman will officiate. Barbara, known to many as “B.J.”, was born August 9, 1938 to parents Roy Daniel and Helen Gertrude Jones. She left this world to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, April 12, 2024. Barbara grew up and attended Sherman public schools where she was an honor student. She graduated from Sherman High School in 1956. After graduation, she moved to Springfield, MO, to live with her grandparents W.O. (Bill) and Florence Calvin Dodd and to work for Graphoanalysis Company, which offered a correspondence course for hand writing analysis. Following that job Barbara moved to Houston, TX where she learned and enjoyed the insurance business. One of note was Alexander and Alexander where she was Vice President responsible for managing the insurance needs of the Paramount Studios. Barbara married Ronald W. Holder on September 2, 1978. After they married, they lived in Bryan, TX, where Ron worked for an engineering firm located on the Texas A&M campus. They later moved to Katy, TX and eventually Farmers Branch, TX, where they started their Holder Realty business. After Ron’s retirement, they closed the real estate business and Barbara worked for an oil exploration company until her retirement in 2008. After Ron’s passing in March, 2009, Barbara moved back to Sherman to be closer to her family. After she settled in Sherman, she rejoined North Park Baptist Church which she had attended prior to moving away from Sherman. She often talked to her family about how she enjoyed her Church friends and particularly the ladies in her Sunday School class. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her great niece Emily Marie Rogers. She is survived by 3 sisters: Judy and husband Wayne Blakey, Carol and husband Richard Morris and Martha and husband Dwight Rogers. In addition, she is survived by her nephews, Ellis Green, Brian Blakey, Craig Blakey, Jerry Rogers, Terry Rogers and Eric Rogers. She is also survived by 11 great nieces and nephews: Kaleb and Jordyn Blakey, Mary Anne McIinnis, Brady Blakey, Parker, Cooper, Fischer, and Carter Rogers, Phillip, Evan and Neallee Rogers and 1 Great Grandniece, Katie Rogers. A family gathering to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held at the Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman on Sunday, April 28, 2024 from 2:00 to 4:00. Both Barbara and Ron elected to be cremated and will be buried at Cedarlawn Cemetery.

Patrick McGraw was born to Jack Frost and Thomas Garnet McGraw on February 17, 1942 in Sherman, Texas. He died on April 6, 2024 at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He is survived by his children Monique McGraw (spouse Beth Niblock), Tara Knorpp, Vara Dyer (spouse Mark Dyer), Ryan McGraw, Stephanie Adams, Katlyn McGraw, Charlie McGraw, Elliott McGraw, ten grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Patrick’s siblings predeceased him, Garnet McGraw, Dee Beaver, Frank McGraw, and Tim McGraw. Patrick was a graduate of Belmont Abby College, Texas A&M, and the University of Texas. His career as a professor of medicine began at Wake Forest University. He retired after thirty years (1980-2010) at the University of Louisville. Patrick remained active after retirement with his passions being his children, grandchildren, his farm, and his faith. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sherman. Father Merlito Abiog will celebrate the mass. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Sherman. The family will greet friends on Friday, April 19, 2024 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church in honor of Dr. Charles Patrick McGraw.

Jane Hignight passed away at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, TX on March 26, 2024. Funeral services for Jane Hignight will be held at North Park Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at 1:00 PM. Dr. David Murphy of North Park Baptist Church will preside the services. Following the ceremony, interment will take place at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The arrangements have been entrusted to Dannel Funeral Home. Jane was a dedicated member of North Park Baptist Church for numerous years. Jane was born to Will and Cleo Gifford on November 22, 1926, in Deport, Texas. On November 24, 1942, she married Grady Hignight, who preceded her in death on April 20, 2003. Jane dedicated her life to retail work. She spent ten years at Gibson Jewelry, twelve years at Lilley’s Department Store, fourteen years at Montgomery Ward, and eventually retired after thirteen years at Walmart in Sherman, TX. She formed meaningful relationships with her customers and made countless friends along the way. Preceding her in passing were her parents, grandson Michael “Scott” Shugart, husband Grady, sisters Dessie Williamson and Beulah Watkins, and brothers Walter Gifford and Curtis Gifford. She is survived by her cherished family: Daughter Melva Shugart and husband Dan of Yantis, TX, Son Steve Hignight Sr and wife Linda of Kerens, Tx, Grandchildren: Shelly McQueen and husband Jeff, Brian Shugart and wife Amy, Steve Hignight Jr. and April McClure, Michael Hignight and wife Caitlin, Marsha Wright and husband Jeff, Melissa Swindler and husband Derek, great grandchildren: Mary Robinson, Laney Robinson and Grady Cash Hignight, Noah Staley Hignight and Harper Kelley-Jane Hignight, Colton McQueen and wife Kailey McQueen, Lane Horner, Darla McQueen, Alisha McQueen Brendon and fiancé Mikaela, Brooke, Regan and Hailey Shugart, Cody Fuller, Alyssa Jones, CJ Swindler, Kristian Lannuier and husband Jordan, Nicole Swindler and Colby Gentry, Laruen McLain and husband John, Victoria Lewis and husband Keith, Great-great grandchildren: Daphne Rose McQueen and Liam Allen McQueen, Lukas Robinson, Lillian Gracia, Brantsen McQueen, Holly and Eli Lannuier, Peyton and Cross Gentry, Lina and Coulter Stanton, Cheyan Underwood and Rockllin Ginnett, Brantley and Lux Lewis, and Great- great- great grandchild Rynn Ginnett. Jane is survived by her sister-in-law Nelda Campbell of Pecan Gap, TX, and daughter-in-law Gwen Light of Sherman, TX. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and her cherished friends and former customers from Walmart in Sherman, TX. The pallbearers, composed of her grandsons and great-grandsons, will include Steve Hignight Jr., Cash Hignight, Michael Hignight, Brian Shugart, Brendon Shugart, Colton McQueen, Lane Horner, and Jeff McQueen. The family will receive friends at North Park Baptist Church from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Jane will lie in state at the funeral home on Monday, April 1, from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM for those wishing to pay their respects prior to her funeral. Lynn was born near Albany, Texas on December 12,1936, to Lonnie Frederick Meeks and Mary Esther Jordan Meeks. She asked Jesus Christ to be her savior in 1946 and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Sudan. She went to her heavenly home on March 26, 2024. Lynn loved music, played clarinet in the band, played piano and sang in several choirs. She was the 1954 valedictorian of Sudan High School where she was chosen “Best All Around Girl”. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas on June 2,1958. Lynn married Charles Benton Perry on June 15, 1958, at First Baptist Church in Sudan, Texas. They had one son, Michael Wayne on May 16, 1961, and divorced in 1980. Lynn was a long-time resident of Lubbock and member of First Baptist Church there. She enjoyed playing golf, watching Red Raider games, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Texas Rangers. She ended her banking career in 2007 when she retired from Plains Capital Bank. She later moved to Sherman to live with her son. Lynn was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Warren Meeks, sister, Jane Meeks Campbell, and her grandson, Andrew Perry. She is survived by her sister, Ann Meeks Arnold; son, Michael Perry, and wife, Glenda; grandchildren, Will Perry and wife, Hellyng, Virginia, Victoria and Angela Perry; great-grandchildren, Camilla, and Nathan Perry, sister-in-law, Jo Meeks; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services, under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home, will be at 3:00 pm on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Merriman Hills Baptist Church of Sherman, pastor Mike Perry officiating. Burial will be at 4:00 pm at Akers Cemetery in Howe, TX. Special thanks to Dr. Sissney & Birdie Home Hospice.
